Tom Rutherford Deck Dedication: Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Honors a Beloved Voice

Dateline: October 2025
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is known around the world as one of the most extraordinary celebrations of hot air ballooning. While its founding is often associated with Sid Cutter, the event’s enduring spirit has always been shaped by many dedicated individuals whose contributions helped Balloon Fiesta grow into what it is today.

One of the most cherished of those individuals was Tom Rutherford, widely remembered as the voice of Balloon Fiesta.

In October 2025, the City of Albuquerque honored Tom’s legacy in a meaningful and lasting way.

Tom Rutherford’s Place in Balloon Fiesta History

From Balloon Fiesta’s earliest days, Tom Rutherford was present during the event’s formative years, when ballooning in Albuquerque was still a bold and unfolding experiment.

Those first gatherings were filled with excitement, unpredictability, and a sense of wonder that no one could fully anticipate. Tom was part of the group of passionate organizers and supporters who helped guide Balloon Fiesta through its growth, as it evolved from a local balloon race into an internationally recognized event.

Tom also contributed to major milestones in ballooning history, including the organization of the first World Championship in 1973, further strengthening Albuquerque’s role as a global center of the sport.

The Voice of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta

Over the years, Tom Rutherford became one of the most familiar and comforting presences at Balloon Fiesta Park.

He served as a public address announcer, master of ceremonies, and storyteller, helping generations of spectators experience the magic of ballooning with context, warmth, and professionalism.

Tom was especially known for his work with America’s Challenge Gas Balloon Events, guiding audiences through launches, ceremonies, and awards banquets with the steady voice that so many came to associate with Balloon Fiesta itself.

For countless pilots, crew members, volunteers, and longtime attendees, Tom’s voice was simply part of what made Balloon Fiesta feel like home.

A Lasting Tribute at Balloon Fiesta Park

Tom Rutherford passed away in November 2024, leaving behind a legacy deeply woven into the Balloon Fiesta community.

In 2025, the City of Albuquerque honored him by renaming the rooftop decks atop the event center at Balloon Fiesta Park:

  • The larger east-side area is now the Tom Rutherford Deck
  • The smaller west-side space, where Tom often announced from, is now the Tom Rutherford Broadcast Deck

These decks continue to serve as important gathering and broadcast spaces, including livestream coverage that reaches ballooning enthusiasts around the world.

Remembering Tom Rutherford’s Legacy

Tom Rutherford was far more than an announcer. He was a steady presence, a trusted voice, and a beloved part of Balloon Fiesta tradition for decades.

This dedication ensures that future generations will continue to recognize the man who helped inform, entertain, and connect the Balloon Fiesta community year after year.

Tom Rutherford’s legacy will always remain part of the story of ballooning in Albuquerque.
